NOT YOUR AVERAGE ROOFING JOB |
A Cornwall based roofing specialist is undertaking a very unusual contract this week, which will require the closure of one of the UK’s busiest motorways.
JR Flat Roofing, based in Redruth, has secured a contract with a longstanding client, Moto Hospitality Ltd, the UK’s biggest provider of motorway service areas.
The contract will mean applying a new roof on the Moto footbridge, which offers a pedestrian route from the north and south bound Trowell service areas, across the busy M1 motorway near Nottingham.
In order to complete the work, JR Flat Roofing will have to work from scaffolding which they have specially designed to sit on a truck, in order for it be situated on the motorway lane.
This will mean closing the motorway one lane at a time and working exclusively at night to complete the £150k contract, from 10pm –

GLAZERITE GETS EVEN TOUGHER WITH THREE MORE SBD LICENCES |
Trade fabricator Glazerite Windows Ltd has gained three new Secured By Design certifications – for composite doors, French doors and the new VEKA Imagine bi-folds – to add to its existing portfolio of police-approved product ranges.
The latest additions, among other things, make Glazerite one of only three UK fabricators who currently hold the sought-after accreditation on bi-folds and one of the very few VEKA fabricators to have both SBD and Part M wheelchair access certification on French doors.
Glazerite now holds SBD certification on its casement, tilt/turn and VS windows and single resi-doors as well as the three new categories. All have been tested to PAS24: 2012 by a certificated independent testing house. The fabricator was also the first to supply the SBD accredited Dynamic 2D hinge

QUEEN’S SPEECH IS A BOOST FOR SMALL BUILDERS, SAYS FMB |
|
|
The Queen’s Speech announcing measures to allow zero carbon exemptions for small developers, and new legislation to tackle late payment, will make a meaningful difference to the fortunes of small construction firms and house builders, says the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).
Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “The legislative programme for the final year of this Parliament shows that the Coalition is far from a so-called “zombie government”. The small developers’ exemption from zero carbon homes regulations will help SME house builders plug the gap in the supply of new homes. The government clearly recognises that the cost |

ZERO CARBON EXEMPTION WILL CREATE MORE LOCAL HOMES |
|
|
Recent press reports stating that small housing developments will be exempt from some zero carbon homes requirements is a positive move towards helping to create more homes and consumer choice says the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).
Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “Speculation ahead of the Queen’s Speech on Wednesday that small housing developments will be exempt from some zero carbon homes requirements is very welcome news. The FMB has been warning for some time that the rapid implementation of the zero carbon homes policy is threatening to deluge smaller house builders in a tsunami of costs that hinder their ability to build.” |

HALF OF ALL HOME OWNERS HAVE REQUESTED CASH-IN-HAND BUILDING WORK |
|
|
More than 55% of all home owners have requested cash-in-hand building work to avoid paying VAT according to new research by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).
Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “This research confirms what we already suspected – too many otherwise law-abiding individuals are asking their builder to carry out cash-in-hand construction work at 0% VAT in order to cut costs. What’s more, when the professional builder refuses, the home owner will all-too-often find a rogue trader that is willing to operate within the black economy. That’s when home owners inevitably become ensnared in nightmare situations with sub-standard refurbishment work that has been carried out with little
