CIC’s Inclusive Environment Award 2018 opens for entries

The Construction Industry Council (CIC) has opened entries for the third CIC Inclusive Environment Award 2017, in recognition of buildings, places and spaces which demonstrate best practice in achieving an inclusive environment – an environment which is safe, flexible and accessible for all.

The Award is an “award of awards” celebrating exemplar schemes and projects previously recognised by a CIC member. It inspires professionals already in practice to raise the standard of inclusivity achieved across the industry. CIC was delighted to receive twice the number of entries for the award last year than in its launch year and looks forward to receiving an even greater number in 2018. The closing date for submissions is 31 August 2018.

Last year’s winner, Wycombe Leisure Centre, had implemented much of the Accessible Sports Facilities Design Guide to encourage greater participation in sport and make the new leisure centre as inclusive as possible for all members of the community of Wycombe District and beyond.

5 Pancras Square was the winner of the inaugural award and is located in the heart of the Kings Cross Central transformation programme. The development demonstrated good inclusive design that goes beyond minimum standards and provides the additional facilities that make a building comfortable and easy to use for everybody.

CIC Chairman and judging panel member, Professor John Nolan said of the award: “I am delighted CIC is running the Inclusive Environment Award for the third year and we have received renewed support from CIC members with double the number of entries last year. I look forward to seeing even more inspiring schemes this year going beyond the minimum regulatory standards and embracing inclusion.”

Judges for the award include; Eoin Burns – Willmott Dixon, Tony Burton – Gardiner & Theobald, Clare Devine – CABE Design Council, John Nolan – Nolan Associates, Neil Smith – Buro Happold and Danna Walker – Built By Us.

Shortlisted entries will be announced in September and the award will be presented at CIC’s Council Meeting on 23 October 2018.
