TRUMP’S STEEL TARIFFS SHOW DANGERS UK FACES POST BREXIT SAYS GMB

A clear message needs to be sent to Trump now that he cannot ride roughshod over UK trade interest, says GMB

Protectionist trade tariffs signed by Donald Trump show the dangers faced by the UK post Brexit, says GMB.

This week the US President officially sanctioned a 25% tariff on steel imports, 10% on aluminium [1], and is now threatening a tax on cars entering the US, together with a threat to ignore the protections on foodstuffs of specific geographical origin - posing a threat to Scotland’s whisky industry and Cornish pasty production.

GMB says the UK must be prepared to take a tough stance with the US and there is currently no basis for a trade deal after Britain leaves the EU.

Supertrucks racks up another winner... with a little help from Mertrux Truck & Van

The changing face of the fenestration industry is reflected in an innovative Multi-Purpose Rack launched by the UK’s number one manufacturer of glass-carrying transport solutions.

Supertrucks designed the latest addition to its market-leading range of vehicle racking in response to the rapid growth in popularity of bigger, heavier products, such as bi-fold doors and windows, and orangeries.

The St Helen’s-based specialist has fitted the first example of its new rack to a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van supplied by East Midlands Dealer Mertrux Truck & Van, with which its parent company, the multi-faceted Bevan Group, enjoys a close relationship. Mertrux is now offering this vehicle for trial by prospective customers.

Fabricated from lightweight aluminium, Supertrucks’ Multi-Purpose Rack is secured to the exterior of the vehicle without the need to drill the sidewall. This is an important factor in helping to ensure that any paint or bodywork warranty provided by the manufacturer remains valid, and that the resale value of the vehicle is protected.

ilke Homes – a scale solution to the affordable housing crisis

The housebuilding industry is on track to deliver the government’s target of one million new homes by 2020. The challenge is to continue expanding supply in the highest-demand areas to improve affordability

The cost of housing has knock-on effects across the economy. As people are forced out to the suburbs, cities become less dynamic. Workers waste time on marathon, energy-sapping commutes. People from the regions cannot afford to move to cities where they might find work. Businesses cannot clear land to build. It is perhaps no coincidence that Britain’s growing housing crisis has coincided with stagnant productivity.

Tackling the housing crisis is...

Small sites and small builders will build homes faster, says FMB

The best way to speed up housing delivery is to get more small builders back into the market and focus more attention on the potential of smaller sites, according to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

In response to the Prime Minister’s speech, Building a Britain fit for future, Brian Berry Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “Small sites tend to deliver more quickly and smaller builders, for whom short term financing is more of a concern, have every incentive to build and sell quickly. More opportunities for these smaller developments will diversify the market, boost capacity and speed up delivery. The Government has clearly recognised this, and is today setting out a raft of changes to national planning policy that will encourage more small sites to come forward. We particularly welcome the move to ensure that at least 20% of the sites identified for housing in local authority’s plans are smaller sites.”

Berry continued: “However, we also need to be aware that the pace of building homes cannot be simply dictated. Those whose business is building houses have very few incentives to just sit on land. SME builders in particular have every incentive to build and sell as quickly as they can, so that they can recoup their investment and move on to the next project – nothing else would make financial sense. But developments can be stalled and slowed down for perfectly good reasons – from the financing difficulties which can often affect smaller builders...
