Colossal Cake Sale Celebrates 30th Birthday

A national family business based in Cornwall is celebrating 30 years, with some “colossal” initiatives to raise funds for an important charity.

Specialist flat roofing contractors, JR Flat Roofing, based in Redruth in Cornwall, is celebrating its 30th anniversary by holding a Colossal Cake Sale on Saturday 3rd May, to raise funds for Help For Heroes, whilst also adding donations from the sale of the John Rogers biography.

Founded by John Rogers in 1984 in Redruth, JR Flat Roofing is a Member of the National Federation of Roofing Contractors, specialising in flat roofing for domestic and commercial businesses.

With a main office in Cornwall and a satellite office in London, the company not only works on contracts within Cornwall, but also sends operatives across the UK, reaching a turnover of £1.4million last year, £1million of which came from work outside of Cornwall – bringing revenue back into the county.

JR Flat Roofing’s clients include London Underground, MOTO services, Cornwall College and various Cornwall Healthcare Trusts.

The business is now operated by John’s children – Nick, Phil and Marion Rogers, after he passed away in September last year.

Marion is pleased to celebrate the company’s 30th anniversary and her dad’s life by supporting a charity that would have meant a great deal to him saying:

“When my dad set up the company in 1984 it was just him and a £2k bank loan, so it is incredible that the business has grown into the national company it is today, employing 19 people. We are so pleased to mark the occasion with this special event to support a fantastic charity which provides assistance for our wounded heroes, as dad spent years in the army and merchant navy.”

Marion published her father’s biography last year, to share John’s colourful life – which included working for the notorious Kray twins as a safe blower and meeting Great Train Robber – Ron Biggs in Rio; John’s childhood years were spent being shunted from institution to institution, whilst during his later years he built a record of public service – becoming a pillar of the local community.

After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1994, John passed away from prostate cancer in September 2013, prompting Marion to publish his memoirs as a biography – John Rogers, A Fighter All The Way.

The book is available to download on Amazon and during JR Flat Roofing’s 30th anniversary year 10p from every book sale will be donated to Help for Heroes which, as an ex-serviceman, was close to John’s heart.

The Colossal Cake Sale will take place on Saturday 3rd May at the company’s head office at Bartles Industrial Estate in Redruth, between 10am and 4pm, and will include a raffle, barbecue, coffee and homemade cakes to purchase.
