Cricket club bowled over by support

A community cricket club in Bradford has been saved from a sticky wicket after getting a helping hand from plastic building products specialist Magden.

Woodlands Cricket Club in Oakenshaw faced a four-figure bill when a rotten wooden screen needed replacement.

It turned to Magden, which specialises in the supply of plastic building products, to supply the materials to refurbish the screen.

The company offered to donate some 16mm fascia boards, which volunteers at the club used to replace the damaged and rotten timber on the existing screen.

Magden commercial director Laurence Hicks explained: “Woodlands Cricket Club is a real hub of the community with youth teams as well as two adult elevens.

“There are a very dedicated group of people running the club who over the years have developed a fantastic facility. When we understood what they needed we contacted our supplier and were able to donate a suitable product.”

The finished result is so impressive that Woodlands are now planning on using the fascia boards to refurbish further screens.

David Elam, financial secretary of Woodlands Cricket Club, said: “A PVC cricket screen can cost anything from £1,500 upwards, which for a community club like ours is a considerable amount. With Magden’s donation plus the skill and elbow grease of our volunteers, we’ve saved ourselves a significant outlay.

“The new screen looks impressive, but best of all it is low maintenance and hard wearing, so should last for many years to come.”

Magden, which has five branches stretching across the north of England, from Yorkshire and Tyneside in the east through to Manchester in the west, is a specialist supplier of plastic building products.

While it has traditionally focussed on insulated glazing and roofline products, the company has recently extended its range to include decorative cladding, Kayflow underground drainage and Fitrite decking.
