Metal Technology’s Passive House range of windows, doors, and curtain walling is making a significant impact across education and student accommodation projects throughout the UK and Ireland, delivering exceptional thermal insulation and airtightness. The company’s Passive House solutions notably played a key role in the design and delivery of the world’s largest Passive House education project – St Columba’s RC High School and Woodmill High School in Fife, Scotland.

Building on this success, Metal Technology will soon expand its Passive House portfolio with the introduction of a high-performance casement window system, further enhancing design flexibility while maintaining the rigorous energy efficiency standards required for Passive House developments.

Supporting projects from concept through completion, Metal Technology provides proactive technical expertise to ensure each system integrates seamlessly into the building’s overall energy and design strategy. This collaborative approach has made the company a trusted partner for fabricators, contractors, developers, and architects. Its Passive House glazing solutions have recently been installed across several major educational developments, including Drumgeith Community Campus in Dundee, Faifley Campus in West Dunbartonshire, and Tain Campus.

Drumgeith Community Campus

The £100m Drumgeith Community Campus in Dundee opened its doors in August, welcoming pupils and the wider community to a state-of-the-art facility designed by Holmes Miller and delivered by Robertson Group in partnership with Dundee City Council.

At the heart of the development is the new Greenfield Academy – Dundee’s first secondary school built to rigorous Passivhaus standards – setting a new benchmark for energy efficiency and sustainable learning environments.

The campus showcases Metal Technology’s high-performance façade solutions, with its advanced Passivhaus-certified glazing systems – System 17 Hi+ Passive House Curtain Walling, System 5-35D Hi+ Passive House Door and System 5-45 Hi+ Passive House Tilt and Turn Window – expertly installed by Avtek Ltd. These systems ensure exceptional thermal performance, airtightness, and comfort, supporting the project’s low-energy design aspirations.

Greenfield Academy provides capacity for around 1,600 pupils, while the wider campus serves as a vibrant community hub. Facilities include a music and drama centre, café, and library – all accessible to the public – alongside extensive sports amenities such as floodlit all-weather pitches, a fitness suite, dance studio, gym, and games halls, encouraging year-round community engagement.

As Dundee’s largest ever investment in education, sport, and community provision, Drumgeith Community Campus represents a flagship project that delivers both outstanding educational opportunities and lasting social value.

Faifley Campus

Designed by Holmes Miller and delivered by Morrison Construction, the £34 million Faifley Campus in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire is a landmark Passivhaus-certified development accommodating approximately 1,200 pupils. The campus brings together Edinbarnet Primary School, St Joseph’s Primary School, an Early Learning and Childcare Centre (ELCC), Faifley Community Library, and shared community spaces within a single, highly energy-efficient building.

A key contributor to the project’s success, Metal Technology’s advanced Passive House glazing systems were fabricated and installed by Avtek. These systems played a critical role in achieving the stringent thermal performance and airtightness standards required for Passivhaus certification.

The design adopts a compact building form combined with an enhanced thermal envelope and a robust airtightness strategy, supporting a fabric-first approach to energy efficiency. Metal Technology’s glazing solutions were integral in minimising heat loss while maximising natural light, contributing to both occupant comfort and reduced operational energy demand.

The completed development provides a future-proofed, sustainable learning environment that supports education, wellbeing, and community engagement – setting a benchmark for low-energy school design across West Dunbartonshire.

Tain Campus

Delivered by Kier Construction for The Highland Council, the new £72 million Tain Campus brings together Tain Royal Academy, the newly named Tain Primary School and St Duthus School onto one single site.

Designed by architecture firm Stallan Brand, the state-of-the-art, Passivhaus-certified campus creates a modern learning environment for children aged 3 to 18 and includes a range of new community facilities including after-school access to outdoor sports pitches, a 2-court gymnasium and 4-court hall, and a dedicated dance and drama studio. Metal Technology’s Passive House glazing systems were installed by fabricator Avtek and played a pivotal role in forming part of the building’s high-performance envelope.

Continuing Momentum

Building on this momentum, Metal Technology systems are also being installed across a number of additional Passive House education projects. These include Caledonia High School in Rosyth, Dean Park Primary School in Edinburgh, Liberton High School in Edinburgh, Nairn Academy, Paisley Grammar School Community Campus, Wester Hailes High School in Edinburgh, and Weavers’ Hall in Northern Ireland – the first Passive House student accommodation project for Queen’s University Belfast.

With a proven track record across some of the UK’s most advanced education facilities, Metal Technology continues to lead the way in delivering sustainable, high-performance glazing systems that enhance learning environments for future generations.
