New topic-specific guidance to support implementation of ISO 45001 occupational health and safety management systems

BSI, the business standards company, has published two new topic-specific guidance documents to support the implementation of occupational health and safety management systems in organizations.

BS 45002-1 and BS 45002-3 compliment the recently published international standard ISO 45001 and its general implementation standard, BS 45002-0.

BS 45002-1 offers guidance on managing occupational health, and is the first document of its kind in the UK. It was developed with input from experts directly involved in writing ISO 45001, including representatives from the HSE, the UK’s regulator for health and safety.

BS 45002-3 offers guidance on incident investigation, including practical steps to take, how to ensure evidence is gathered and the importance of investigating root causes of health and safety incidents in the workplace.

Both new standards can assist organizations of all shapes and sizes to manage these specific aspects of ISO 45001 in a way that is proportionate and reflects the context of each organization.

The standards are written in plain English and are intended to help anyone who needs to manage health and safety in the workplace regardless of whether they have individual expertise or training.

Both new standards can be used on their own or to support meeting the requirements of ISO 45001.

Anne Hayes, Head of Governance and Resilience at BSI, said: “BS 45002-1 and 3 provide practical, accessible guidance for organizations that wish to improve their occupational health and safety performance. At the heart of both standards is an intention to make occupational health and safety as uncomplicated and as straightforward as possible without compromising on the need to do the best to protect workers.”

BS 18004, the guidance documents to OHSAS 18001 is now withdrawn and the BS 45002 series is intended to replace it. BS 45002-2 Occupational health and safety – general guidelines for the application of ISO 45001 – managing risks and opportunities, is scheduled to publish later this year.
